Sorrento through the eyes of a tourist

According to the legend, that was Sorrento shore where guileful sirens were trying to put Odyssey and his mates off their way, but Odyssey didn’t give way to the sorcery and deceived them. However, Greeks are considered to be the founders of Sorrento, which was later conquered by the Romans. The city has always been a prestigious place for one to have rest at: Roman patricians built their villas in Sorrento outskirts, whereas emperor Tiberius took up his residence on the neighbouring island, Capri.

The city’s beautiful green terraces come down to the sea and stop by a high precipice. In ancient times those steep shores served as a reliable protection from the enemies. However, what Sorrento can’t brag about is sandy beaches. There are some of them found along the coastline, but those can be counted on the fingers of one’s hand and can only be reached with the help of special lifts. Beaches adjoin Marina Piccola and Marina Grande ports, so the best idea is to hire a catamaran and swim far from the coast where you will observe a wonderful view on Sorrento and its coastline. In the skyline you will see tops of the Vesuvius mount which reminds of the tragedy that happened on the other side of the Neapolitan bay, in Pompeii.

Several earthquakes occurred in Sorrento too. For instance, in the beginning of the 20th century several intense earthquakes scared away tourists from here for some time, but none of the cataclysms could shake the popularity of this place.

Summer is an extremely hot season in Sorrento – luckily, at night cold breeze coming from the sea cools red-hot houses and streets. Surprising as it might be, you won’t find conditioners in many hotels. The reason for this is their thick stone walls erected in the last century, which help keep the night’s coolness all day long.

There are absolutely unique hotels found in Sorrento. One of them is “Minerva”, which was built in the end of the XIX century and still keeps its unique style. Still, some modern features were added to it, of course: for instance, it is essential that a hotel of such class has a swimming pool. Moreover, one of the most extensive and beautiful panoramas can be seen from the hotel’s balcony.

A few people like walking along the city streets at daytime, but in the evening crowds of young people throng the street. Sorrento’s main shopping street, Via Corso, starts with Piazza Tasso. Most of the bars, clubs, restaurants and shops are found on the street. Every morning, from Marina Grande port, hydrofoils depart to Capri and Ischia islands and start their sea cruises to the neighbouring cities of Positano and Amalfi. Sea voyage is also the best way to get to the cities of Naples and Pompeii.

The peninsula is renowned for its thick lemon groves. Lemon is used to produce lemon liquor Limoncello. The liquor is rather strong and you can keep one bottle of it for years. Many shops offer tourists to try this liquor for free since they know that having tried it once, they won’t refrain from buying it.

Local cuisine does not differ much from traditional Italian one – the same pasta and pizza, but prepared with a lot more seafood products. When being in Sorrento, one thing you should definitely do is visit its fish restaurants. The most agreeable of them are located next to the Grand Marina port. You will be simply dazzled by the variety of fish: sardines, tunny, eels, shrimps and other inhabitants of the Tyrrhenian Sea are always fresh and can be prepared in various ways.

The Aberdeen Football Club

The City of Aberdeen has distinguished itself in the world of sports. It is renowned for the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, the sixth oldest gold club in the world which was founded in 1780 and hosted the Senior British Open in 2005. It is also acknowledged for its superb swimming team, known as COAST or the City of Aberdeen Swimming Team, a composite team that unites swimmers from six local clubs. COAST was established in 1996 and has seen three of its swimmers qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

Overall, Aberdeen is best known in sports for its exploits in football, particularly through its two football teams, the Cove Rangers F.C. of the Highland Football League and specially the Aberdeen Football Club, which was founded in 1903.

The Aberdeen Football Club is the pride of the city. The team has won the European Cup once (1983) and the European Super Cup that same year, making it the only Scottish team to have won two European trophies. Aberdeen F.C. has also won the Scottish League Championship three times from 1980 to 1986 and was the last team to win the Scottish Premier League Championship outside the Old Firm. In addition, the club's home stadium Pittodrie represents a milestone in history as the first all-seated stadium in Britain.

Among the top football players who have suited up for Aberdeen F.C. are Gordon Strachan, Alex McLeish and club legend Willie Miller. Aberdeen is also the place of birth of Denis Law, the joint top scorer for the Scotland national team. Law, however, spent his professional career in England and Italy.

The Aberdeen F.C. is only one of three pre-World War I Scottish teams that has never been relegated. (The Rangers and Celtic are the others.) The team's early success is best described as steady rather than spectacular, culminating with their ascension as Scottish Cup Winners in 1946-47, the first of their seven Scottish Cup victories.

The club would reach their glory years during the eighties under Alex Ferguson, who became Aberdeen's manager in 1978. During Ferguson's eight-year tenure, the club would taste triumph more frequently that all the previous years of their history combined.

Under Ferguson's stewardship, players such as Strachan, McLeish, Miller and Jim Leighton all flourished and developed into the core of a winning team. Ferguson quickly led the club to their second League title in 1979-80, followed by three successive Scottish Cup triumphs from 1982 to 1984, two more League titles in 1983-84 and 1984-85, and the European Cup Winners' Cup victory over powerhouse Real Madrid in May 1983 which made Aberdeen F.C. only the third Scottish team to ever win a European trophy. It quickly followed this up with a European Super Cup championship in December 1983.

In the 1985-86 season, Aberdeen F.C. won the Scottish Cup as well as the League Cup to cap the Ferguson era on a successful note. Ferguson left the club to serve as manager of Manchester United F.C., a position he holds to this day. Unfortunately, Aberdeen F.C.'s fortunes have not been the same since Ferguson's departure.

The incumbent manager of the Aberdeen Football Club is Jimmy Claderwood, who assumed the position in 2004. Under Calderwood, the club finished fourth in the 2004-05 season and sixth in the 2005-06 season.

Trivial lovers will appreciate the following titbits about the Aberdeen Football Club:

1. Goalkeeper Mark de Clerck scored on his debut versus Berwick Rangers in 1980. It was a unique instance that featured a Belgian goalkeeper, signed from a Dutch club, scoring for a Scottish side on English soil.

2. The Aberdeen Football Club is the only Scottish team to have won two European trophies, both of them in 1983 - the European Cup Winners Cup against Real Madrid on May 11 and the European Super Cup against the European Cup holders Hamburg later that year.

3. The first player to ever score a goal for Aberdeen was Willie McAulay against Stenhousemuir on August 15, 1903 before a crowd of 8,000 spectators at Pittodrie.

4. The Aberdeen Football Club was the first team to lose a European tie on penalties. This was during the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970 following a 4-4 aggregate draw against the Budapest Honved Football Club of Hungary.

Overall, the Aberdeen Football Club has compiled a sterling record of achievement. Their honours include the following victories: European Cup Winners' Cup (1) - 1982-83; European Super Cup (1) - 1983-84;
Scottish League Champions (4) - 1954-55; 1979-80; 1983-84; 1984-85;
Scottish Cup Winners (7) - 1946-47; 1969-70; 1981-82; 1982-83; 1983-84; 1985-86; 1989-90; Scottish League Cup Winners (5) - 1955-56; 1976-77; 1985-86; 1989-90; 1995-96; Southern League Cup Winners (1) - 1946; Drybrough Cup Winners (2) - 1971-72; 1980-81; Tennents' Sixes Winners (2) - 1986; 1987; Highland Football League (reserve team championship) - 1915; 1925; and Adidas "World Team of the Year" - 1983.

Top 10 Tips For Visiting Egypt

In my capacity as the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours Limited, one of my jobs is to ensure every client has the best tour possible, so here's my top 10 tips if you are considering holidays in Egypt

1. Consider your dress. Egypt is a largely Muslim country and with this in mind, men and women should consider what they wear. You certainly do not have to be over the top, lets face it, it's a hot climate. But you should avoid shorts and short sleeved shirts. Women may also want to consider taking a head scarf too, not for general use, but just in case they visit particularly important temples etc.

2. Pens. Offer a child an Egyptian pound or a pen and they will take the pen every time. Pens for children are like gold-dust. So if you want to give the kids a treat, pack a box of cheap pens and give them out whenever you get the chance. Do note though, that you need to do this not too openly as if you don't you may have a very good natured riot on your hands as kids will appear out of nowhere when you start handing them out.

3. Toilet Paper. Toilet paper is often at a premium at historical sites and so it's a really good idea to take a roll out of your hotel and take it in your back whenever you are out for the day. It should also be noted here that toilets at many historical sites are not of a "western standard" so arranging toilet visits in hotels, restaurant stops etc is not a bad idea.

4. Water. Like with any other hot climates, you should look to take plenty of water with you on your days out and make sure it's sealed of course.

5 Avoid Ice / Salads etc. This related partly to number 4. People generally know not to drink non bottled water (to avoid possible upset stomachs), but often they over look that ice is frozen water and that salads have often been washed in water. Keep these things in mind when ordering food and drinks.

6 Take small notes. If you are going to tip, it's a good idea and it avoids embarrassment to change up some bigger notes for a number of 1 LE (Egyptian Pound) notes

7 Be Strong. This applies to people begging. Egypt is a relatively financially poor country and with that comes the fact that people (children and adults) will beg. This is obviously a very personal issue, but obviously it's possible to personally sort out all of Egypts financial problems. So feel free to help out where you can and when you feel comfortable, but realise, it's just not possible to give to everyone who asks.

8 When in Rome. This again partly relates to tip 1. You are ultimately holidaying in a more reserved country and therefore you need to just think about things like public shows of affection. Obviously we want you to have a good time, just be respectful to a different culture and you'll be just fine.

9 Haggle. As a tourist, when you buy almost anything, anywhere, the price will be marked up. You therefore HAVE to bargain your socks off. We generally suggest offering a maximum of 1/3 to 1/2 of the asking price and work up. If you can do it, you are even better to not offer a price at all, but just keep saying no and let them lower the price. The best tip is to just keep saying no until the person selling stops and lets you walk. At that point, you just won't get a better price and then you have the option to go back and say - OK, I'll take it at that price !

10 Baksheesh. If you do not know what this is, by the end of your holidays you will ! Baksheesh is a tip in Egypt for just about anything. From carrying your bags at the airport to offering to have a picture with you or showing around a tomb. So just be aware. If you chose to pay (it's completely optional) pay with the smallest bills / nots possible (1 LE will be just fine).
