The events of the battle of Arnhem were dramatized in the 1977 movie A Bridge Too Far. As a tribute, to the battle the bridge was rebuilt and renamed John Frost-bridge after the commander of the paratroopers.
It is known as the Green City on the Rhine as it is located a long the River Rhine with dense forests as its backdrop. It is a dynamic economic centre in a prosperous region of innovation and ambition. The city offers a rich cultural climate, an attractive city centre with many offices and public services and is home to a number of well-known international companies.
It is the fifth largest shopping town in Holland. The main shopping streets and attractive alley ways offer a wide selection of fashion houses, specialist shops, boutiques and various shopping centres. Arnhem has four major shopping streets, that are connected. They are the Roggestraat, Ketelstraat, Vijzelstraat and Rijnstraat. The Bakkerstraat is a shopping street, and has always been the distinguished street of Arnhem.
A market is held in the Kerk Plein on Friday's and Saturday's each week.
Korenmarkt the large square in the centre of Arnhem is surrounded by nice restaurants and bars and as soon as the sun is out, you will find many pavement cafes.
Arnhem has many fountains. The most beautiful are the ones a long the Jans Binnen- and Buitensingels, where the town canal used to be. In the centre is also the Aku-fountain famous for it's cooling down in the summer time many people just hop in for refreshments. The largest fountain in amounts of water in Europe is the fountain that is in the centre of the Blue Waves underneath the new bridge.
Burgers Zoo and Safari Park houses more than 3,000 animals in an of 18 hectare area. The zoo attendants aim to provide the animals with as natural an environment as possible, and the zoo is regarded highly for its natural habitats and enclosures. There is a safari park and a bush jungle inhabited by tropical animals and plants. There are also artificial desert and ocean areas In the safari park a 250-metre-long walking bridge gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful panorama from a vantage point.
